For a true Otago landscape experience with  rocks resembling something  straight out of Mars, tussocks moving with the wind, the ranges with their colours changing throughout the day as the light dances, the cows mooing, the hawks gliding in the sky and the little blackbirds come to say hi....Sutton a tiny town that is truly in the heart of all that Otago is known for.

Put it on your list if you need to recharge with the healing powers of this beautiful natural environment.  Laying close to the Taieri River; head for a picnic and a dip. So close is the amazing Rock and Pillar Ranges (some Lord of the Rings was filmed here) you look out to them and in Winter they are often capped with snow; the "Crater" is approx. 1450m.   Drive about  17kms  to start your 2.5  hour hike (just one of many Rock and Pillar walks available). Search DOC and see the maps.

A couple of clicks  from the house;   stroll  the loop around the Sutton Salt Lake, an 8ha reserve; NZ's only inland salt lake with gorgeous geckos  to be found hiding on the rocks and stunning  scenery.  Eat at the Hotel in Middlemarch,  coffee in the Kissing  Cafe, grab some bread and milk from Maggies, visit the Middlemarch museum and find out about the submarine etc and get on your bike for  the start or finish of the Central Otago Rail Trail  (all about 6kms away).   Go for day trips from here and explore this amazing region, then return to sit on the deck watch the mountains, birds, cows and chew the fat....

NB I use this platform to advertise but most bookings come from referrals, schools, groups, locals, tourists operators  etc
