A Taste of History and Hospitality: Colleen and David Hurd’s Pitches Store in Ophir

Nestled in the heart of Central Otago, in the quiet and historic town of Ophir, lies a hidden gem that has become a favourite among cyclists and travellers alike—Pitches Store. Owned and operated by Colleen and David Hurd, this beautifully restored heritage building offers boutique accommodation, delicious cuisine, and a welcoming atmosphere that reflects the passion and dedication of its owners.

The Journey to Ophir

Colleen and David’s story is one of adventure, patience, and a deep connection to the Central Otago region. David, originally from Clyde, had long-standing family ties to the area, with his father serving as a vicar in a vast parish stretching from Omakau to Wanaka. Although life took him to Wellington for work and study, the pull of his roots never faded.

For years, the couple searched for the perfect place to settle, exploring different properties before coming across the site that would eventually become Pitches Store. When they first saw it, the building was little more than “empty shell with rubbish inside,” but something about it felt right. With a shared love for old buildings and the guidance of a heritage architect, they embarked on an ambitious restoration project.

Breathing New Life into History

Originally built in the late 1800s, Pitches Store had a rich past, once serving as a butchery among other roles in the community. During the restoration, layers of history were uncovered, including hand-plastered walls and remnants of the original structure. Colleen and David took great care to preserve the building’s character while transforming it into a warm and inviting space.

Today, Pitches Store operates as a seven-day-a-week boutique hotel and restaurant, offering guests a unique blend of historic charm and modern comfort. The carefully curated rooms provide a peaceful retreat for weary travellers, and the on-site restaurant serves up fresh, locally inspired dishes that delight visitors and locals alike.

A Haven for Cyclists and Travellers

Situated along the popular Otago Central Rail Trail, Pitches Store has become a beloved stop for cyclists making their way through the stunning landscapes of Central Otago. Many arrive tired but exhilarated from their journey, eager to relax with a glass of wine, enjoy a delicious meal, and unwind in the tranquil surroundings.

According to Colleen, cyclists are “ideal customers” who bring an infectious energy to the space. Some are first-time visitors, while others return time and time again, often bringing new groups of friends or family to share the experience. The accommodation and restaurant cater to their needs, offering hearty meals, comfortable beds, and even spa facilities for those looking to soothe tired muscles.

A Labor of Love

Running Pitches Store has been a fulfilling yet demanding endeavour for Colleen and David. With a background in hospitality—including operating a café and a bed and breakfast—Colleen has always had a knack for creating welcoming spaces. She speaks fondly of her dedicated staff, many of whom have been with them for years, contributing to the warm and friendly atmosphere that makes Pitches Store so special.

Now, after 13 years, the couple is looking to pass the torch to new owners. Colleen is eager to spend more time with her grandchildren, who are spread between Auckland and Omakau. While they plan to remain in the area, they hope to find someone who will continue their vision and keep the spirit of Pitches Store alive.

A Legacy of Hospitality

For those who visit Pitches Store, it’s clear that Colleen and David have created something truly special. Their dedication to preserving history, combined with their passion for hospitality, has turned a forgotten building into a thriving destination. Whether you’re cycling the Rail Trail, exploring Central Otago, or simply looking for a place to escape, Pitches Store offers a warm welcome, a taste of history, and an unforgettable experience.
