Tips for Cycling the Otago Central Rail Trail in Summer
Summer is a magical time to ride the Otago Central Rail Trail. Long sunny days, wide open landscapes, refreshingly cool evenings, and that unbeatable feeling of freedom as you pedal through history make it easy to see why this is New Zealand’s Original Great Ride.
Whether it’s your first visit or a return journey, a little planning goes a long way. Here are our top tips to help you make the most of your summer adventure on the Trail.

Book Ahead – Summer Is Busy!
Summer is peak season, and the Rail Trail is a popular destination for good reason. We strongly recommend booking accommodation, bike hire, transport, and meals in advance. This helps ensure a relaxed journey and supports the wonderful local businesses that make the Trail experience so special. Resources and help to plan your trip.

Sun Smart Is Trail Smart
The Central Otago sun is no joke!
Pack and apply plenty of sunscreen, wear a hat or helmet visor, and consider lightweight long sleeves. Sunglasses are a must — both for comfort and protection.

Water & Snacks Are Essential
Make sure you’re carrying plenty of water, especially on warmer days. While there are towns along the Trail, distances between stops can feel longer in the heat. A good supply of snacks will keep your energy levels up and your spirits high. Bike friendly cafe's and restaurant are listed here:

Let Someone Know Your Plans
Before heading out each day, make sure someone knows your planned route and destination. There is mobile coverage along most of the Trail, but there are a few stretches where reception drops out. It’s all part of the adventure — just best enjoyed with a little foresight.
Ophir Swimming Pool
Cool Off the Right Way
A refreshing swim can be very tempting on a hot day. For safety and comfort, we recommend swimming at local pools, including those in Alexandra and Ophir — perfect spots to cool down and relax after a day’s riding.

Food Supplies Along the Way
The main supermarkets are located in Alexandra, making it a great place to stock up. Along the Trail, you’ll also find Four Square stores in several towns, plus cafes and eateries offering delicious local fare.
Otago Central Rail Trail Passport
Don’t Forget Your Rail Trail Passport!
Your Otago Central Rail Trail Passport is a fun keepsake and a great way to track your journey. Better still, every passport purchased helps support ongoing trail development — so you’re giving back while creating memories.

25 Years of Memories – Photo Story Competition
It’s been 25 years since the official opening of the Otago Central Rail Trail — and we’re celebrating!
Whether you rode in the early days (when bookings involved landlines, fax machines, or even a zip-zap!) or have visited more recently, we’d love to see your memories.
