  • Monday Mar 2 2026

There’s something truly special about cycling the Otago Central Rail Trail in autumn. The days are crisp and clear, the light is golden, and the landscape glows in rich seasonal colour.

Autumn is peak season on the trail — and a favourite time for couples, families and groups of friends to slow down and soak it all in.

Whether you’re planning a long-awaited escape, a multi-generational adventure, or a relaxed getaway with friends, a little forward planning will help you make the most of your autumn ride.

Plan ahead for a smooth ride
Autumn is one of the busiest times on the trail, so booking ahead is essential — especially for accommodation, cafés, restaurants and experiences along the way. Many of our small businesses operate seasonally, and planning in advance helps ensure everything you’re looking forward to is open and ready to welcome you.

What to pack for autumn cycling
Autumn weather in Central Otago can be beautifully settled — but it pays to be prepared for a few seasons in one day.

A few essentials to bring along:

  • A camera or smartphone — the autumn colours are stunning and worth capturing
  • Layered clothing you can easily add or remove as temperatures change
  • A lightweight waterproof jacket, just in case
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses — even cooler days can bring strong UV
  • Plenty of water to stay hydrated
  • Your Otago Central Rail Trail Passport — or purchase one if it’s not already included in your booking

The Passport is more than a keepsake. Proceeds go directly towards maintaining and developing the trail, and it becomes a special reminder of your journey long after the ride is over.

Trail etiquette — protecting the experience together

The Rail Trail is shared by cyclists, walkers and locals, and a little courtesy goes a long way:

  • Keep to the left-hand side of the trail

  • Support local cafés and eateries by enjoying food on their premises rather than bringing your own lunch
  • Take your time, be patient, and embrace the slower pace that makes the trail so special

By supporting local businesses, you’re helping sustain the communities that make this ride unforgettable.

Take time to enjoy the activities along the way.  One of the joys of the Otago Central Rail Trail is that it’s not just about the cycling — it’s about the stories, places and experiences you discover along the route.

Some autumn favourites include:

  • Central Otago wine tastings — treat yourself to a tasting at Monte Christo Winery or Judge Rock Vineyard. These are intimate, relaxed experiences, and bookings are essential in autumn.
  • Posting a letter the old-fashioned way at Ophir Post Office — a charming stop that connects you with the region’s heritage.

  • Gilchrist’s Store — the oldest continuously trading store in New Zealand. Part shop, part living museum, and well worth a stop.

Explore further afield
With a little planning and the help of local transfer operators, you can venture to St Bathans or Naseby. Walk around the striking, man-made Blue Lake, or try indoor curling or the luge at Maniototo Adventure Park.

Adding an extra experience or two can turn a great ride into something truly memorable.

Stay connected and ride with confidence
Make sure someone knows your plans — whether that’s your accommodation host, a support operator, or friends and whānau back home. Good communication adds peace of mind and helps ensure a safe, enjoyable trip for everyone.
