The trail is clear of snow apart from in some shaded areas and is now passable. 

Please be very careful if out for a walk or riding as there some minor areas of the trail surface that are uneven following some water table drainage work. We are awaiting some refinishing of these areas of the trail surface. 

Please make sure that you carry a wind jacket and gloves make the ride more pleasant with any wind chill.

It is that time of the year when we have magpies nesting along the trail that tend to swoop down as cyclists pass. Keep pedalling as they only follow for a short distance. Report any issues to your Cycle Operator including the location, or report as outlined at the bottom of this page.   

What to expect along the Trail

Central Otago is a semi desert area and can experience minus temperatures in the winter to above 25 degrees in the summer. In the winter, frosts can be expected creating icy conditions and snowfalls at times can create a brief winter wonderland on the actual trail.

Spring is a great time to ride the trail, pedaling past the paddocks of lambs, calves and fawns. The weather can be changeable at times but it is a great time to ride the trail.

Ensure that you are always well prepared with water, sunblock, warm clothing and a raincoat. Always check the weather forecast like any outdoor activity and talk with the locals to get their advice when required. 

Please note that there is limited or no cellphone coverage in the Poolburn Gorge or the section between Daisy Bank and Hyde.
