Visit Hayes Engineering Works & Homestead, a Heritage New Zealand destination consisting of several buildings including a remarkable belt-driven workshop, a large 1920’s sundried brick homestead and a restored sun-dried brick cottage where pioneers Hannah and Ernest Hayes raised their family.  Come and share their remarkable story of tenacity and kiwi ingenuity as they designed, developed, manufactured and sold products which are still being made today.

The cottage has been re-purposed as a café and shop.   We serve a range of fresh and nutritious food.  Our cakes and sweet treats are legendary! Cool drinks and free water are available to top up your drink bottles ready for the next leg of your journey.

Every Sunday from 5th October to 26th April

This season, we’re also introducing summer Homestead and Garden Tours, giving visitors a deeper look into the lives and legacy of the Hayes family.

A Fresh Focus: Honouring Hannah Hayes

While the engineering story remains central to the Hayes experience, this season we’re placing a special focus on Hannah Hayes, the homestead, and our heritage garden. Our goal is to share a richer, more complete story of life at Hayes—and to offer something special for the ladies riding the trail, who we know will enjoy connecting with Hannah’s history and the legacy she left behind.

From historic storytelling to peaceful moments in the garden and warm hospitality at Hannah’s Café, we aim to offer so much more than just the engineering experience.
