It may look like any little New Zealand country town, but this is a place where emotions can run high… excitement and anticipation if you are about to start your Rail Trail trip – or maybe pride and relief if you have finished.

The Trail ends (or starts) by the roadside gates, north of the railway station. From here to the coast the train is still alive and well. The Taieri Gorge Railway, known as “one of the world’s great train trips,” travels twice a week in summer from Dunedin to Middlemarch and back, and every other day it comes as far as Pukerangi (21 km downhill by road to the township.)

There are still plenty of farmers around Middlemarch, (come to the bi-annual Singles Ball and you may meet one!) but now they enjoy the company of B&Bs, cafes, bike-hire operators, tour operators…

Make sure you visit the Sutton Salt Lake (23 km return) while you are in Middlemarch – and keep an eye out for Hobbits – the distinctive landscape of New Zealand’s only inland salt lake caught the movie-maker’s eye. The lake water sometimes evaporates in hot weather, leaving a lunar landscape – and you don’t have to climb to the top of the Rock and Pillar Mountains to see spectacular schist tors. Bring your camera.
