If you want to experience Central Otago at a more sedate pace, then some of the best fishing in the country is right here.
Lake Dunstan and the Clutha River are open from 1 October to 30 September and the Manuherikia River has an open season from 1 October to 30 April for salmon and trout fishing.
Tributary rivers and streams are closed during the winter months to protect fish populations over the spawning period.
If you want to get up on the hills for a change of scenery, there are numerous irrigation dams where you can also fish. The Upper Taieri River between Paerau and Waipiata is one of the best-kept fisherman’s secrets, and is also popular with bird watchers.
Contact the Central Otago I-Sites for fishing guides – you may have a more successful day – and fishing licences (short-term as well as season) are available at sports shops or from www.fishandgame.org.nz
