We Kiwis have always known that we live in a beautiful country. But the Lord of the Rings movies have earned us a new alter ego – “Home of Middle Earth”.
It’s not too difficult to give yourself a bit of film star status while you are doing the Rail Trail. You can visit two of the movie locations right here in Otago – they will make a memorable background for your photo. You will need transport up to the Poolburn Dam, site of the village of Rohan in the "Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey". (There won’t be any Orcs or Wargs to worry about.)
The stark, rocky terrain around the Sutton Salt Lake (near Middlemarch) was also a perfect location for the movie - it's a short walk from the road.
