Styx Hotel and Jail
The historic Styx Hotel and Jail is located at the foot of the Dunstan Trail (the early route to the Central Otago goldfields). As a stop-over point, the Styx Jail was where gold bullion was protected on the way to Otago Central Goldfields.
Given the importance and the location of this over night stop, there were two hotels that operated on either side of the river in case of flooding. The Hotel and Jail still stand on the banks of the Taieri River and although the Hotel is now privately owned the Jail can be visited.
