Otago Central Rail Trail is a great opportunity for family-friendly holidays. No matter when you visit, there are always plenty of things for kids to do.
Doing parts (or all) of the Trail can be a great family experience – child trailers or seats can be hired, and older children just love being able to race down a safe, off-road track. Camping grounds can add to the whole adventure.
Along the trail you can stop and picnic, drink in the spectacular scenery, learn about Otago Central's railway history, or throw stones and swim in the Manuherikia River. Off the trail, you can explore the gold heritage, buy ice-creams at the Gilchrist Store, and visit Hayes Engineering, the home of Kiwi ingenuity. Take the time to discover attractions further afield with a family tour – four-wheel driving, boating.
In winter, there are loads of other family fun activities including ice skating, curling and the ice luge.
"Fantastic family adventure! We did the route starting at Clyde in 5 days which was doable for our 10yo daughter. The slopes are not too steep, and the scenery is spectacular. The distances we cycled ranged between 25-40km per day. I'd highly recommend this as a family holiday, or for groups of friends. It can be done in 3 days which would be physically more challenging. We loved meeting a lot of Ozzies on the way too."
