With the Poolburn Hotel just a 9km free courtesy bus ride away, the Auripo Road Station is ideal for ending or starting a day on the Rail Trail. Cycling or walking from Clyde to Middlemarch, you get to enjoy all that the Poolburn Gorge has to offer without the prospect of having to go on the same day all the way to Oturehua or Wedderburn. Coming from Middlemarch, calling it a day at the Auripo Station site means being able to start the next morning with a leisurely downhill cruise through the Poolburn Gorge. The Poolburn Hotel's budget accommodation and convivial atmosphere is also close to Omakau and Ophir. Just a 5km free courtesy bus ride over Raggedy Range where you get the bonus of great views across the Manuherikia and Ida Valleys.

There has pretty much been a Poolburn Hotel on this spot from the earliest gold rush days. This is the 1930’s version and like all hotels of the era provided accommodation for travellers in what until relatively recent years was a very remote part of New Zealand. Accommodation is still available for up to 16 in 8 cheerfully painted rooms offering the basics for a good night’s sleep. Three shared bathrooms. Evening meals are served in the dining room. The garden bar is a sheltered suntrap inside the mudbrick walls of a very old store attached to the original hotel.
